"My works here reflect the last four years—though the last two could almost be left out because of the pandemic. It all began with printing a motif onto a large tile! At that moment I realized this was not a tile at all; on its own, on a bare wall, it was a very balanced painting!
Thanks to the computer’s capabilities, with a single click the motif could be enlarged, reduced, multiplied, transformed from a linear state into a field, and with another click the result could be shifted from one color to another—it was a delightful process (experience). Then, being able to instantly print all the colors contained in the resulting forms with a digital printer using ceramic colorants brought its own joy. In fact, this was the computer‑aided mode of expression of our time! Call the outcome design, or call it an artwork…
This opportunity became possible because I took part in the Vitra Ceramic Art Studio’s Guest Artist Program of the Eczacıbaşı Building Group, housed within the Ceramics–Glass Department of the Mimar Sinan University Faculty of Fine Arts (MSÜGSF).
However, as an incurable, wheel‑obsessed ceramist, the old and the new always appear together in my exhibitions! After all, at my age I represent three generations. To clarify this “three generations” matter: First, I was a young instructor in the Ceramics Department of the Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts (MÜGSF); the age gap between my students and me was very small. Over the years, my students became the age of my children. As of 2009, at Istanbul Technical University’s Department of Fine Arts (İTÜ GSB), my students are of an age to be my grandchildren. Unfortunately, for the past two years I have only been able to communicate with them online."
